Work progresses on the construction of Warsaw West (Warszawa Zachodnia) station

On 19 December Budimex commissioned the first parts of the new Warsaw West (Warszawa Zachodnia) station: a 200m long footbridge for passengers over pre-existing platforms and the new platforms #6 and #9. Following several months of work, passengers have gained access to the station via a new footbridge from Jerozolimskie Avenue towards Wola.

Modernisation of the Warsaw West station began in December 2020. After less than 12 months from the commencement of work, the contract completion rate has reached 30%. Such rapid progress results from the appropriate use of human and equipment potential. Over 500 people are currently working on the construction site. More than 150 equipment units are used for the works, and Budimex employees rely on the support of as many as 70 subcontractors. Construction elements on levels 0, -1, -2 of the new subway under the Warsaw West (Warszawa Zachodnia) station are being completed in parallel. Work on the construction of a new multipurpose building has also been completed.

So far 3.5 km of new tracks and nearly 40 turnouts (for trains to switch tracks) have been laid. Poles and gates for the network of new overhead contact line are already in place. Work on platform #6 has been completed and platform #7 is nearing completion. Massive modern shelters are being finished above the platforms. A subway is being constructed between the ring line platform and platforms #6, #7 and #8.

The ground has been replaced and a concrete floor poured. The Local Control Centre (LCS) building is also being fitted with railway traffic control devices i.e. computers and electronics necessary for efficient and safe train traffic operation.

The work at Warsaw West (Warszawa Zachodnia) is one of the largest investments by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., costing over PLN 1.9 billion net. The project is implemented under OPI 5.1-13: “Works on the Warsaw diametrical line between Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East) and Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West).” The Project is scheduled for completion in 2023.

Warsaw West (Warszawa Zachodnia) is a strategic station in Poland in terms of the number of trains running through it.  On average, about 1,000 agglomeration, regional, long-distance national and international trains pass through it each day.
