Contract signed. Construction of the Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia begins

From as early as 2024, students will be able to use the modern Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia. On 2 August, the contract for the construction of the Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia was signed. The event was attended by His Magnificence Rector of the Maritime University of Gdynia, PhD, DSc EE, master mariner Adam Weintrit, and representatives of Budimex - Mariusz Hurylski, Director of the Northern Branch, and Radosław Slesar, Director of Region 1 in the Northern Branch of the DBO.

‘The construction of the Sports Centre for the students of Gdynia Maritime University is an extremely important and priority task for the University responsible for the education of maritime personnel’ - emphasises His Magnificence Rector of the Maritime University of Gdynia, PhD, DSc EE, master mariner Adam Weintrit.  ‘The construction, which will begin later this week, is a necessary investment that the University community has been looking forward to for several years, and at the same time, it will increase the attractiveness of the University. Our sports centre will give priority to the University's students, doctoral students and employees, but I am convinced that this facility will also serve the residents of Gdynia and function seven days a week, from morning to evening’ - adds the Rector of the Maritime University.

‘We are implementing the contract under the “build” formula. We plan to hand over the building to the developer with an occupancy permit within 22 months from the date of signing the contract, i.e. by June 2024. As a General Contractor, we are a reliable partner, valued for honouring our contractual obligations. We employ proven partners/contractors and experienced engineering staff to carry out the development, guaranteeing quality and timeliness - says Jakub Nagraba - Director of Budimex General Construction Division.  We are also executing the construction of the Offshore Centre in Gdańsk for the same developer, where cooperation is proceeding in a good and professional atmosphere’ - Jakub Nagraba adds.

‘The entire facility is designed to best suit our needs. One example is the space in the sports hall, which will be adaptable to various sports or recreational activities as needed. It will be possible, for example, to quickly divide it into three independent volleyball courts, all of which meet FIVB requirements. If we add a climbing wall, a fitness area, a sauna, you can see that with this facility we will be able to significantly expand and make the offer of sports and recreational activities for our students and employees more attractive’ - emphasises Dr Andrzej Lachowicz, director of the Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia.

The Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia will include:

- a full-size sports hall with a climbing wall,

- 4 changing rooms with full sanitary facilities,

- a changing room for referees and staff with sanitary facilities,

- 2 rooms for coaches,

Key figures:

Cubic volume: 38,460.21 m3

Total area: 6,983 m2

Building height: 11.9 m;

The architectural design was prepared by ART Projekt K&M Sp. z o.o.

The building will be constructed on the Maritime University campus on Morska Street, on the site of the previous sports hall, which was demolished in 2020.  Due to the poor technical condition and high maintenance costs of the facility, modernising the hall proved too costly and pointless.

According to the Chancellor of the Maritime University, Filip Malata - the construction site for the Maritime University Sports Centre in Gdynia will be handed over on 5 August 2022. By the end of the year, preparatory work, surveying, earthworks, construction and installation work will have been carried out. The opening of the sports complex is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024. The cost of the development, including equipment, is approximately PLN 55 million. The project will be realised from its own funds and the state budget in the form of a specific grant from the Ministry of Infrastructure.

The plans of the Maritime University of Gdynia also include the construction of a new student dormitory located in the immediate vicinity of the University's main building, continuing the construction of the Sports Centre as the second stage of the development.
