Ceremonial decoration of the ridgepole at the Specialist Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin

On July 6, a ceremonial wreath was hung at a toping out ceremony on the eighth floor of the Specialist Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin, executed by Budimex. This is a sign that construction has reached its peak. The wreath was hung on the LPR helipad at the top of the hospital under construction. It was placed on a special attachment by a 50-metre crane.

 

The biggest challenge was the foundation works for this facility, due to its location in the vicinity of the escarpment and the old town of Lublin”, said Jakub Nagraba, General Construction Director at Budimex, during the ceremony.

 

Protection of the escarpment from Staszica St. – the building of the new hospital “segment C” was designed in such a way that 70% of its volume was “cut” into the existing escarpment, making it necessary to protect it against landslides. The buildings of the existing SPSK hospital No. 1 are located at the top of the escarpment. The 16-metre-high escarpment was secured by an expanded palisade made of reinforced concrete piles, 21 m long.

 

“The investment is very modern. The leaders of Polish medicine in many fields work in this hospital. We will educate students better here. We also increased the number of students at the Faculty of Medicine”, Wojciech Załuska, MD, Ph.D., the rector of the Medical University, which is also the investor, said during the meeting.

 

Investors positively assessed the advancement of works.

 

“Many thanks to Budimex. The leader of this type of projects in our city”, emphasised the Lublin Voivode, Lech Sprawka.

 

“The new hospital is located on the site of the former water reservoir and in the immediate vicinity of the Czechówka river. The buildings are built in peat and silt, which are non-bearing soils, thus necessitating the reinforcement of the ground and the foundation of the building on piles. Due to the level of the basement of segment A and B below the very high groundwater table, it was necessary to protect the excavation against the inflow of water from the side of the excavation slope, through a tight concrete palisade and from the bottom of the excavation, through a filtering barrier made of cement-soil, resulting from high-pressure injection of cement grout”, said the Contract Director, Radosław Mazio.

 

In order to achieve this stage of construction, it was necessary to carry out many demolitions and reorganise the hospital’s operation. Most of all, there was a need to replace active sewage networks, gas, energy or medical gases supplying the existing hospital, which could not be temporarily disconnected – their operation had to be maintained on a continuous basis. It was necessary to build a new sewage pumping station, including infectious sewage, to be able to switch it over and demolish the old pumping station which was in the way of the newly built facility. Demolitions and deep excavations were carried out in the immediate vicinity of historic buildings and, inter alia, the existing ward of an infectious diseases hospital.

 

The construction of the new part of the hospital began in October 2019. To date, the construction is 50% complete. Completion of works is planned for mid-2022. Currently, over 200 Budimex employees and subcontractors are involved in the construction.

 

Basic data:

 

  • total area 33,700 m2;
  • usable area 15,500 m2;
  • cubic capacity 152,000 m3;
  • L-shaped building, divided into zones A, B and C, dimensions: 58.7m x 113m (width from 30m to 37m);
  • the so-called lower terrace (zone A) will house an operating theatre with eight rooms, an emergency department and intensive care. Wards with beds for patients will be located on the upper floors of zones B and C. On the lower floors, there will be rooms for diagnostic laboratories, laboratories and the Blood Bank. On the roof, there will be a helipad for the Polish Medical Air Rescue;
  • number of beds – 127;
  • building structure in monolithic reinforced concrete technology for zone “C” and prefabricated for zones A and B;
  • Approximately 2,500 tonnes of reinforcing steel were used, 15,000 m3 of concrete and 3,500 prefabricated elements were built in;
  • the number of storeys varies depending on the zone; with the highest, zone “B” (the next topping out ceremony), having 7 overground storeys + landing pad and one underground storey;
  • about 200 people work at the construction site, including 25 people from the BX supervision.
