Budimex to Build the Metropolitan Station in Lublin

On 18 December 2020 Budimex signed a contract as the General Contractor with Zarząd Dróg i Mostów (Road and Bridge Authority) and Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego (Mass City Transit Authority) in Lublin for the construction of Zintegrowane Centrum Komunikacyjne (ZCK — Integrated Transport Hub). The Budimex bid won by offering the best value in the tender completed in October 2020.

Budimex will refresh the pre-existing square in front of the station in Lublin by converting it into a uniquely designed pedestrian mall and a modern regional transport hub. Under this project and the related work packages 1, 3, and 4, the General Contractor will construct a new building for the bus and train station between Młyńska, Gazowa, and Dworcowa Streets. New platforms are planned to swiftly process the city and suburban buses and coaches.

“It is a milestone for the consistent transport policy of the city. After years of effort, Lublin will have a transport station capable of tackling the challenges of the 21st century. This is one of the biggest and most important capital projects for the city, co-financed with EU funds. We will build a fully functional transport hub that integrates the Lublin city transport with regional and long-distance links. I am confident that this project will provide an example of modern transport solutions for other cities in Poland and Europe. The completely reinvented location, which Lublin has needed for a long time, will open by 2022,” says Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor of Lublin.

“We are very happy to deliver a project this important in Lublin, a city where Budimex has been active for more than 15 years. After the Arena Lublin stadium, the athletic arena, the renewal of Plac Litewski and Park Ludowy, the alteration of Mełgiewska Street, Bohaterów Monte Cassino Street, the Grygowa Street overpass, and extension of Aleja Solidarności towards Warsaw, the construction of the metropolitan station with the alteration of its traffic system is yet another organisational and engineering challenge,” says Artur Popko, Vice President and COO of Budimex.

The project contract provides for the construction of an underground garage below the metropolitan station building with a floor area of 7,500 m2 and 174 car spaces. The metropolitan station building is planned to feature a green roof with plant species selected to keep the air clean. The planned structure will feature modern technological solutions, including a dedicated rainwater recovery system to supply water for watering of the plants and for the bathrooms. The overall surface area of the planned three-storey building is over 18,000 m2. The station will be adapted for the collision-free movement of pedestrians and PRMs.

“The station building, particularly that which defines its uniqueness and modern design, such as the ‘pillar trees’, require the utmost care and precision of execution to achieve the effect planned by the architect. We are fully ready to implement the project not only engineering-wise, but in terms of project organisation to minimise obstruction to local residents at the implementation stage,” Artur Popko adds.

For the project, Budimex will alter the existing streets and build new ones in central Lublin. Several roads, footpaths and bike paths around the station will have their appearance completely changed. Following its renewal, the station square will become a decorative pedestrian mall without any vehicular traffic. The mall will provide a visual and functional link to the main entrance of the train station. In the area in front of the new station building, Kiss&Ride bays are planned. 1-Maja Street, which is architecturally an extension of Plac Dworcowy will feature new trees and shrubs, new street furniture, parking spaces, and bicycle racks.

The project provides for expansion of Krochmalna Street with two new roadways. Along the new roadways there will be more than 120 parking bays for vans and buses. The area is planned to feature a staff and technical building for the metropolitan station personnel, plus welfare amenities for bus and coach drivers.

The metropolitan station in Lublin is another building construction project delivered by Budimex. Acting as the General Contractor, Budimex is now working on expanding Publiczny Szpital Kliniczny nr 1 (1st Public University Hospital) in Lublin by the addition of a new building with an operating suite, ER area, ICU, diagnostic processing units and laboratories. Over the past two years, Budimex has built integrated transport hubs in Katowice and Kielce at the request of the city authorities.
