Budimex completes another section of Via Baltica

On 3 January 2022, Budimex, together with the investor, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways and the Ministry of Infrastructure, officially opened the S61 Wysokie-Raczki section. The 20-kilometre section of the new expressway is the first completed section of the Via Baltica route in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

The construction work began in October 2019. The investment has involved the construction of 20.17 km of concrete-surface expressway with a load capacity of 115 kN/axle (11.5 tonnes per axle), the “Wysokie” junction with grade separation, including 2 roundabouts, and 31 access roads with a total length of 32.36 km (with an aggregate or bituminous surface), 25 engineering structures, such as bridges, road viaducts, crossings for animals and wildlife crossings. In addition, 7 roads crossing the main route, with a total length of 6.22 km, have been reconstructed.

For this purpose, we used 150,000 m3 of concrete and 2,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel, and carried out about 3 million m3 of earthworks. The value of the completed work amounts to PLN 575 million (gross).

Andrzej Adamczyk – Minister of Infrastructure: “This road will contribute to the development of two regions in Poland: Podlasie and Warmia-Masuria. The S61 section opens four months ahead of schedule. It demonstrates that we do already have modern roads, often better than those in western countries. I would like to thank very much all those employees of the investor, contract engineer and general contractor who devoted a part of their life to the road.”

Cezary Lysenko – Director of Infrastructure Construction at Budimex: “We finished the project 4 months ahead of the final deadline. Budimex is constructing 40% of the Via Baltica route length. The newly built road has been constructed with a cement concrete surface. This investment is more challenging for the contractor. The work also coincided with the pandemic. Despite these difficulties, we show that it is possible to complete construction work on time provided that there is good cooperation among the investor, administration and local communities.”

Budimex has also completed other sections of the S61 route in the Podlaskie Voivodeship: the Stawiski – Szczuczyn bypass in 2021 and the Suwałki bypass in 2019.  Budimex is also carrying out the construction work for the S61 Suwałki – Budzisko section This part of Via Baltica is due to be completed in the autumn of 2022.
