The opening ceremony of the construction works at the Turów Power Plant

On 18 May 2015, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the the construction site of a new power unit at the Turów Power Plant.
The project worth net PLN 3 billion 250 million is being carried out by the consortium of the following companies: Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (consortium leader, with 55.38% of shares), Budimex SA (consortium partner, with 22.31% of shares) and Tecnicas Reunidas SA (consortium partner, with 22.31% of shares).
An order to start the construction works was issued on 1 December 2014 by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna belonging to the PGE Capital Group.
Upon receiving this decision, Budimex commenced design works and the preparation of the area of the construction site and temporary facilities. Currently the cooling towers’ basins are being demolished. This will take several months. Next, the contractor will relocate the railway tracks used for communication with the area of transformers of the existing power plant. It will also be necessary to remove any installations colliding with the newly designed facilities and construct new water supply and sewage as well as industrial systems.
After the design stage, finishing dismantling, demolition and relocation works, Budimex will start construction works, i.e. earth works and foundations.

“This contract is very important for us. At present, it is the largest one that Budimex is executing in the power industry. We have a necessary capacity to efficiently execute the project,” said Andrzej Goławski, Director of the Energy and Industrial Construction at Budimex. “We are planning a further growth in the energy industry. Therefore, we expect an increase in employment of specialists in this field” he added.

The total value of the energy contracts signed by Budimex is PLN 814.5 million net. Currently, the company executes contracts for the PGE Group, as well as for EDF and PGNiG.

The contract for the construction of a new power generating unit of net electrical capacity of 450 MWe (megawatts of electric power) including the installation of a supercritical once-through boiler, a condensation turbine with a generator and a wet flue gas desulphurisation system, was concluded on 10 July 2014. The consortium was given 56 months for this project, starting with the day of ordering the works to be started.

The scope of works of Budimex and Tecnicas Reunidas includes:

  • design,
  • construction and installation works, including the delivery of steel structures,
  • deliveries and installation of the electrical part and installation of measurement and control, as well as I&C equipment,
  • construction of the cooling system using a cooling tower with a system of discharge of treated flue gases,
  • installation of the ash disposal and deslagging system,
  • other deliveries and works related to auxiliary systems.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe is to supply the utility steam generator, all the flue gas cleaning equipment, piping, turbine/generator and instrumentation & control and will furthermore place the power plant into service.

The new unit is one of the projects of the investment programme of the PGE Capital Group with the total value of ca. PLN 50 billion, which will significantly limit the environmental impact of the company through a material reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitric oxides and dust. In the years 2014-2020, for the construction of new
production assets and modernization of the current ones, the Group wants to spend ca. PLN 30 billion.
