Budimex will perform the next section of Via Baltica

On the 8th of January, Budimex S.A. signed a contract with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in Białystok for the construction of the S8 expressway section from the end of the ring road of Suwałki to Budzisko with the ring road of Szypliszki. The implementation of the contract under the “design and build” system will last until October 2022.

The route covered by the works runs through Suwałki and Szypliszki communes in the Podlaskie Province to the former border crossing with Lithuania in Budzisko. It is a section of Via Baltica, an international road corridor, an investment on a European scale connecting the Baltic countries with Western Europe. The S61 expressway constitutes an important part running through the Mazowieckie, Podlaskie and Warmia-Masuria Provinces.

“We are proud that we can carry out the fourth section of a route of such importance not only on the Polish, but also on a international scale. It is a huge project, requiring the work of numerous employees and the use of many equipment units. Within the project, we will carry out earthworks at the level of approx. 8.9 million m3, and the main passage of an area of 500,000 m2”, says Dariusz Blocher, the President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.

Within the contract, the company will construct approx. 24 kilometres of a two-lane expressway. The task, evaluated at PLN 1.037 billion, is to be performed within 32 months (including winter periods). The contract is the result of a public tender announced by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in 2019, after the termination of the contract with the previous contractor.

The contract with Budimex takes into account the design, acquisition of decisions and construction permits required by law and, as a result, the construction of the S61 expressway section. The scope of the undertaking also covers the construction of the technical infrastructure necessary for the correct functioning of the expressway, for example access roads intended for local traffic, and 34 engineering facilities including bridges, flyovers, culverts and crossing places for animals. Budimex will also construct the environmental protection equipment, including acoustic barriers and safety devices. The existing roads and infrastructure facilities, such as water-pipe and gas networks, in conflict with the planned undertaking, will be also rebuilt. The investment is covered by a five-year guarantee.

It is not the only contract implemented by Budimex along Via Baltica. In 2019, Budimex completed works on an approximately thirteen-kilometre section of the Suwałki ring road, which is an extension of the S61 expressway, also constructed by Budimex and opened in 2014, within the Augustów ring road. Currently, Budimex is implementing two other sections of Via Baltica: an over 18-kilometre Stawiski-Szczuczyn section and a 20-kilometre Wysokie-Raczki section. The total value of all investments currently being implemented by Budimex S.A. within the S61 expressway exceeds PLN 2 billion.

Length of the section: 24 km
Number of flyovers and bridges: 19
Rain water and sanitary system: 53 km in length
